Nude
Plastic Planet
My Kingdom Music
2013
I was pretty excited for this one when I found out the band name. I mean come on, what’s not to love about an Italian band called Nude? “Plastic Planet” is the band’s first release in over 10 years, and despite the extremely cheesy artwork, the album has got an interesting sound.
I feel like the style of this record was the result of one of those conversations that musicians have after smoking a lot of weed. I wouldn’t be surprised if it went down like, “Hey guys, what if you combined 80’s synth-pop with... uh... gothic metal”! That being said, it’s pretty obvious that it’s not easy to get these two polar opposite styles to work well together. This was pretty apparent right from the get go. The opener, “Shining Stardust,” begins with the cheesiest of cheese-tastic cheesy synth hooks, and then is overtaken by meaty guitars with a Depeche Mode-esque vocalist somewhere in the background.
This mix of styles is absolutely a novel idea, but when the songwriting and production is sub-par (which it is), you end up with something like “Plastic Planet”. The potential for a breakthrough sound is there, however the tracks just aren’t memorable, and the cheese knob definitely needs to be turned down a notch, or seven.
Check out the teaser for the album!
