Hmm.... this is a weird one, a jam band, which was sort of assembled to play for Scott Ian’s (Anthrax) 50th birthday, led to “this”. Pearl Aday, (daughter of Meatloaf and wife of Scott) has been trying to kickstart a career for some years now with the aid of Mother Superior’s mainman, Jim Wilson, so when they played a private show at his house, on his b-day and the idea was kicked around; it seemed that everybody was agreeable. John Tempesta (The Cult, ex-Helmet, ex-Testament, ex-Exodus, White Zombie) and Joey Vera (Armored Saint, Fates Warning) were asked to lend their talents and seemingly since they were also fans of the aforementioned trio of Mother Superior, in the 90s they were positive from the start. Wilson himself was also pretty much into the idea and found the suggestion quite flattering.
So “Ride” is more or less the “playlist” of that little importu gig, that this “tribute band”, recorded in only a couple of days. The whole style, is really reminiscent of that of Mother Superior originals, but the twin guitars, which don’t antagonize each other, but phatten up the original overdubs and the somewhat better chops of everyone involved and the up-to-date, production, make the whole affair sound a bit more refined and the dual vox of Wilson and Aday, soften things up, giving them a somewhat Southern “accent”. I suppose, it’s a cool ass, B-day present for Ian, by his wife and a bit of a “second” chance for people to discover, “Mother Superior” through a very eclectic set of re-recordings/tribute, by this “band of buddies”.
Interesting in almost every way, but it will probably appeal to Mo-Sup fans. Still it feels more original than half of those, faux-retro worshiping bands, out for a buck.
