Luna Rise
Dark Days and Bright Nights
NRT Records
2015
Luna Rise is an Austrian newcomer formed in 2011. The band released an EP, “Smoking Kills, But Love Can Break a Heart”, in their first year of existence, and now they have come up with their debut release.
Luna Rise’s music style mixes modern rock, hard rock, alternative rock, dark rock, & gothic rock all together. Quite frequently, they reminded me of a kinda “modern” version of HIM, but without being so cheesy. Sure, they move on that mainstream dark/gothic rock path and they probably wanna have the recognition of the aforementioned band… but that thing would be a double edge sword for various reasons. The singer, Chris Divine, is OK but I think he goes for that Ville singing style too often. The production is fine even though it could have been somewhat tighter and clearer.
“Dark Days and Bright Nights” features the guests Bernie Pfeiffer (Exit To Eden) on “Demons Inside”, Tanja Ilic on “RZRKT”, Lisa Untersmayr on “Dancing With Tears in My Eyes” and Melanie Hirner on “Until The Stars Have Come”. Given the chance the cover on “Dancing With Tears in My Eyes” is utterly cheesy & tacky. It’s been a while since I heard such an uninspired cover. Anyhow, the guys seem to aim high but they need a lot more work to go further. They should get rid of that ridiculous HIM-like style, find their own identity and come up with memorable hooklines… cuz this kind of music, which is for the crowds, needs fine melodies in general. They do not have any bad tracks, but their songwriting style is a bit repetitive and the hooklines are flat on the whole. They won’t conquer the world with their debut album but if they try to fix those things which keep them back, then they could do much better than now… they are young and they have all the time in the world.
