The Jokers
Hurricane
SPV/Steamhammer
2015
The Jokers (a completely unoriginal name, for a band that, I’m sure a few more bands around the globe might share) are a band from Liverpool, that is churning out, some classic rock, that covers everything from The Beatles heaviest, The Faces, onwards, to the Zeps, Free and Uriah Heeps 80s output, (throw in a bit of Thunder and Gary Moore at his most rock ‘n’ blues) these Jokers seem to be touching on almost every major era of British rock and coming up with original material that might be rich in traditional influences, but doesn’t sound dated or unoriginal.
Where bands like The Answer received great acclaim for being a poor man’s Zepellin and really struggled after a point these guys on their third effort, sound really inspired and have no trouble, delivering a dozen of brilliant free flowing, natural rockers, with excellent riffs and hooks, nice danceable grooves and a characteristic and charismatic vocalist in Wane Parry.
Solid throughout, “Hurricane”, is most excellent compilation of songs. From the breezy but rocking “Run 4 Cover” to the hard rocking title track, the devilish “She’s on Fire”, the quirky semi-ballad “Angel” from “cover to cover” to use an old expression if you get a vinyl/or a book, this album and band positively rock. If you live in the UK, where they mostly gig, go see them, if they’re half as good as they’re on record, they’ll be great!
