Freedom Call
Beyond
SPV/Steamhammer
2014
I have never hidden my preference towards Freedom Call. I’ve been following this band since its early days and I have listened to every new album they have delivered from time to time. The previous release, “Land of the Crimson Dawn”, featured some funny metallic elements which made the whole listening more cheery & amusing. Now, the guys decided to go their usual way.
The have changed the drummer once more… this time we find Ramy Ali (Evidence One, Iron Mask etc.) behind the drum kit. Apart from that the original bassist Ilker Ersin (PowerWorld) is back again! Following the traditional heavy/power path, “Beyond” features tracks with nice choruses, strong guitars, melodious keys and powerful rhythm sections. Nothing new or groundbreakin’ but on the other hand lots of stuff to sink your teeth into… especially if you fancy this kind of music. The dynamic & full production has been delivered by Chris Bay & Stephan Ernst. The guys have done a great job once again.
The album lasts about 59 minutes. There’s also a limited boxset version with a bonus CD, book & poster, and a 2LP gatefold colored vinyl version including 4 bonus tracks. The bonus CD features 13 songs overall. 6 of them are from “Live in the Black Forest” & the other 7 from “Unplugged & Masqueraded”. All in all, “Beyond” is a qualitative, melodic heavy/power metal album which will appeal to the fans of the band and to the power metal freaks. I do know that the power metal genre is overloaded but Freedom Call is one of the most significant and creative bands of the specific genre. They always come up with something good which is worth listening to…
