Flight Brigade have been hailed as “astonishing” by BBC Radio 2 and are currently soaring, but bassist Tom Clay felt a burning need to explore his own journey that has led to his debut solo single, “Sanctuary”.
Those who know Tom closely will be aware that music was not always his primary ambition. Born and raised in rural Hampshire, it could be argued that the cliché “small town, big dreams” applied to Tom. At just 20 years old and having been been bitten by the acting bug, he jumped on a plane to chase his ambitions in the big lights and bigger buzz of Los Angeles.
Little did he know that his Los Angeles dream would lead to love. Soon after arriving in the buzzing hive of creativity, Tom met a girl, fell in love and decided to escape the big city for quieter pastures. The pair married in the Mohave Desert and opted to relocate back to the UK.
Having put his acting dreams to bed, Tom focused instead on his other love – music. Having penned a set of songs, he was building a name for himself on the live circuit when his wife was tragically killed.
It was joining Flight Brigade alongside childhood friends a few years later that reignited his passion for composition, he started once again to pour his thoughts into song. Armed with new material, Tom found himself with a management deal and started to revel in a life on the road with both Flight Brigade and his own solo project.
With praise poured on his songs by BBC Introducing, Tom is currently working towards the release of his debut solo single “Sanctuary” in 2016. A powerful exploration of the need to share and offload, “Sanctuary” is a feel good anthem with echoes of The Lumineers, Jamie Lawson and Passenger which is set to establish Tom as one of the UK's most thought provoking troubadours.
