Suicidal Tendencies
World Gone Mad
Suicidal Records
2016
Three years after the “hoodoo” “13”, as it was proven afterwards, Suicidal Tendencies are back with a new full-length album and a renewed line-up. Well, to tell the truth the secret lies in the line-up changes and especially on the drummer’s position. You see the mighty Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer, Grip Inc.) recorded the drums on 9 tracks out of 11, while the other two tracks (specifically tracks 8 & 11) were recorded by the band’s drum tech Phillip Greenwood. The other two new members are guitarist Jeff Pogan (Oneironaut) and bassist Ra “Chile” Diaz. The band’s old-known bassist Steve Brunner (Infectious Grooves) is participating in tracks 8 & 11.
Surely, “World Gone Mad” is way more powerful and heavy that its predecessor. It presents that crossover thrash metal sound of the 80s and the 90s but with a more up-to-date but not “modern” (as it is meant today) production. Then again, the production is not as heavy or “beefy” as the ones on thrash metal bands, but I think they didn’t have in mind to do something like that at long last. Personally I was never a “crossover” fan, but there were some bands that did some good job back in the day. Well, in a way the crossover movement was something like todays’ modern/nu/extreme movement, which is represented by mostly young bands that believe they are fighting hard against society and all those mean things. It’s a bit of a paradox to see the same dudes that had been “fighting” through their music for the same shit in the 80s, huh?!
Anyhow, “World Gone Mad” will satisfy the band’s die-hard fans and even those who fancy the “crossover thrash metal” movement. It’s true that Lombardo has given that little extra to the tracks with his drumming and it’s a pity that we do not get to hear him on Slayer anymore, but that’s another story. Let’s hope that the new line-up will work for Suicidal Tendencies and they will keep doing the thing they like, the way the like it too…
