Stick Men
Prog Noir
MoonJune Records
2016
There may have been almost 3 years since their previous album “Deep”, but time does not really matter for progressive “weird” acts such as Stick Men. You see, when others are trying to find ways to become more fan friendly and “popish”, there are some bands that are making strange prog music that’s hard to get, if you do not give it time and several listens. Needless to say, Stick Men is one of those bands!
All the performances are simply amazing; the music themes change every so often to offer the music variety that’s essential but not obligatory. The tracks are not very long as some might think but as I have said a thousand times before, there’s no need to have long tracks in order to be progressive… unfortunately, many fans and musicians make the specific mistake and call something progressive due to its duration and not due to its musical diversity. Stick Men prove my point right & clear! The production is lush & full in general. The mixing and post-production was made by Benjamin Schafer and Markus Reuter for Unsung Productions. The album was mastered by Lee Fletcher.
Certainly, “Prog Noir” is not an easy-listening album for all times of the day and it needs time to get into. This album addresses the prog fans that fancy King Crimson or the band’s previous work and have an idea of what to expect. Either way you see it, “Prog Noir” is a very rich & motivating prog rock album that nicely blends various music styles together…
