Slamer
Nowhere Land
Frontiers Records
2013
This is a project that I had been waiting for a long time! Mike Slamer is a terrific guitarist/songwriter/producer and Terry Brock is a hell of a singer! When I saw that those two men co-operated on Seventh Key’s albums, then the question “Why don’t they do something together?” kept entering my head over and over again when I was listening to those albums. Finally, time has passed and one of the most expected co-operations in melodic rock history has finally become true!
All of you who have loved Steelhouse Lane, Strangeways and Seventh Key have at last found another favorite band to listen to. Yes, “Nowhere Land” has all the good elements of the aforementioned bands, not that much from Strangeways ‘cause Mike is the mastermind here, and the sound – song quality that Mike Slamer always had and will have. Don’t know why, but when I hear that Slamer is going to participate in a project I know that this project will be at least excellent. Mike has the Midas touch I think, when it comes to melodic rock/AOR music.
I do not want to write many words about the songs of the album, ‘cause words cannot deliver the magical atmosphere of the songs themselves. On the other hand, how can it be possible for anyone not to love songs like: “Nowhere Land”, “Strength to Carry On” (one of the best ballads that I have ever heard), “Not in Love”, “Come to Me” (atmospheric touching ballad), “Higher Ground”, “Jaded”, “Beyond the Pale” (astounding gloomy esoteric & smooth tune), “Runaway”, “Perfect Circle” and “Superstar”. Just keep in mind that the album’s production is simply perfect! Mike is once again teaching how a good “modern” production should be to all those wannabe good producers that destroy bands.
I have listened to this album many times and still I’m excited. “Nowhere Land” just gets better and better with each listen. If you ask for melody, atmosphere, hooks and excellent performances in general, then this album is the answer. Get this outstanding album as soon as possible!
