Signum Regis
Exodus
Ulterium Records
2013
The Slovakian power metal act, Signum Regis, is back after a 3-year period with its third yet more ambitious work to date. Ambitious cuz’ this time we have a bunch of well-known vocalist which are participating and due to the album concept which deals with The Israelite Exodus from ancient Egypt.
So, we have on vocals: Goran Edman (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen, John Norum), Lance King (ex-Pyramaze, Balance of Power), Michael Vescera (Obsession, Animetal USA), Matt Smith (Theocracy), Daisa Munhoz (Vandroya, Soulspell), Eli Prinsen (Sacred Warrior, The Sacrificed), Samuel Nyman (Manimal), Thomas L. Winkler [Gloryhammer, Emerald) and Mayo Petranin (Castaway). Goran has been the main singer on the band’s two previous albums as well. The album was mixed Ronnie Konig (band’s bassit) together with Filip Kolus (band’s guitarist) and mastered by the renowned Tommy Hansen (Helloween, Jorn, Circus Maximus, etc.) at Jailhouse Studios. Also to note that the artwork was designed by the eminent Felipe Machado Franco (Blind Guardian, Rhapsody of Fire, Iced Earth etc.).
Apart from the typical power metal there are also numerous melodic metal passages on the album. The riff-o-logy cuz’ it has been made with tact and the melodies in most songs are nice. The fact that they do not avoid the power metal platitudes and the reprocessing of the genre’s same ideas makes the final outcome not so enthralling eventually. I know it’s hard for any band to do so… you see even those bands which defined the genre cannot escape their own cants… but that doesn’t mean that no power metal loyal fan will find something to revel in “Exodus”.
