It might have been too long, but Saturnus haven’t been forgotten by their loyal fans. A 6-year-absence made the fans hungrier for the Danish doom metal deathsters. They have returned in full strength , with the original bassist Brian Pomy Hansen back, a new drummer Henrik Glass who has also been with the band between albums in the past and along with two new guitarists Rune Stiassny (also on keys) & Mattias Svensson, who finally left the band for personal reasons after the official release date. The guest singer Laurie Ann Haus (Autumn Tears, Rain Fell Within, Todesbonden) has also done a great job with her ethereal voice. The album was recorded at Winding Road Studio once again with the renowned producer Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica, Morbid Angel, Blind Gaurdian etc.) and the final outcome is first-rate.

Well, in some cases those members’ changes would probably have hurt the band’s musical outcome but since Saturnus are moving around the songwriter/singer Thomas Akim Grønbæk Jensen, that thing, fortunately, didn’t occur at all. Likewise, do not expect to listen to “Veronika Decides to Die” part II here. I know it’s been quite a while since the band came up with new material but they did move on in every part. Although it’s not easy to say so, I think that this is the band’s finest moment to date… for the more I listen to this album the more it enraptures me. You see it’s that time of year when everything is glacial… the cold & the heavy weather… play their part to make the environment just perfectly freezing, morose & gloomy for Saturnus.

The acoustic atmospheric & moody moments when Thomas’ soliloquy is echoing in every side of your esoteric world give a mellower attribute… while his death growls are coming right after to make the whole scenery more doomed, obscure & fated. How can you actually face it? Creepy, gloomy, frozen, melancholic, sorrowful, gothic and despairing sounds are all over this release. A wonderful yet hopeless journey through the heart of the Winter where “Saturn in Ascension” is the one and only soundtrack that you can listen to. Be sure of your inner feelings & state when you choose to enter this doomed, icy, atmospheric, forlorn & woeful dominion… Where everything seems lost & gone forever… here comes melancholy, desolation & finally redemption…

PS: The bonus-track “Limbs of Crystal Clear” (re-mastered demo from 1994), will be featured on the ltd. first edition digi-CD and the ltd. double-LP.
