Too Many Reasons
Frontiers Records
2013
Having become very popular due to the late 70s smash hit “Baby Come Back”, Player enjoy much more recognition they could ever dream. I do not know if it was thanks to that one big hit, or due to the later TV & music career of its members. For instance, Ronn Moss as Ridge Forrester on the very successful TV show “The Bold and the Beautiful” was one of the alpha males of the 80s! Peter Beckett, on the other hand, made a songwriter career and he cooperated with some hot names of the music industry such as: Janet Jackson, Kenny Rodgers, Survivor, The Commodores & Vanessa Hudgens among others. Player was inactive in the 80s and half of the 90s when Peter and Ronn got back together and released “Lost in Reality” (a.k.a “Electric Shadow” in Japan). Then again they called it a day until recently when they re-united for once more and after the release of the “Addiction” EP last year, they came up with their first full-length studio album in about 18 years!
Coming in our day, Player do what they always did… they offer us easy-listening pop-rock with variousAOR & Westcoast features. The beautiful, clear & warm sound makes the whole result even more tempting at times. Of course, they could have avoided including so many songs in the album cuz’ almost 60 minutes of music for a soft-rock album is too much. Another thing that I don’t fancy at all, is the “re-recording” of “Baby Come Back”. OK guys, but how many times should you include this song to your albums in order to let it go finally?
There are a bunch of radio-friendly tunes here such as: “Precious”, “I Will”, “The Sins of Yesterday”, “Too Many Reasons”, “A Part of Me” & “Kites”, which will please the old fans of the band, and not only. I think that this CD could be ideal to be played when you’re preparing a romantic dinner for a lady or your man and like something nice and not too distractive to play on the background. Ohh, let’s not forget a glass of good red wine. At first I had my doubts but after a few spins, I can say that it is rather decent & pleasant, even though not for every day or time.
