It’s somewhat bizarre, that the whole rock metal scene as well as the “supposed” metal intelligentsia, that used to be in the “rock press” has either been hijacked by comparative amateurs that lack experience, in the first case and the same, in the latter or for the worse, people that are either clueless, or if they have a clue are malignant and ruthless and only care to make a quick buck, off the dying corpse of a “scene that their studies consider : “dying”.
Everywhere I see, I read people wildly claiming that band X or Y is amazing and magnificent and that such and such song was incredible, heaping praise on bands that really don’t deserve it… this is a result of people either being easily impressed, because they’re only being introduced to metal “now” and they’ve only been exposed to a few bands, so the newest and better things that they will heat are bound to impress them, without a doubt, while they will be oblivious to a lot of the music’s history, since no company would bother to promote an inactive band in its roster… so it’s unlikely that someone would by mistake listen to something “different” than a canon of “classic” stuff and the DJ’s rarely, decide to take a foray beyond the safety zone that the dirty “dozen” or couple of “dozen” bands that the widest variety of their crowd might be familiar with, will allow them to, which is a shame, really!
Noveria, are a prog power metal band in the Italian style, with members from various Italian bands, that only came to be last year and released their debut this year. A couple of guys come from DGM, a band that has been around for almost 20 years now, but are, relatively, newer members, that have only been in the band for about a decade or so. Anyway... the style is reminiscent of this prog/tech and sometimes slightly aggressive and heavier hybrid that bands like Eldritch would indulge in but not tipping as much into power metal, DGM, were more progressive, at least the albums that I have, in mind, since I lost touch with them, rather early on.
They’re fairly melodic and have interesting, ideas, but they suffer a bit in the mix department, with their sound being a bit more befit an extreme metal band, quite dry and treble as it is without a good dynamic range and full nice bass. Some minor comparisons to some neoclassical bands and soloists might be drawn, but Noveria on their debut are not on par. There are many good ideas, all over the place, and the band members are all good at what they do, but the overall state of the album, doesn’t allow the listener to enjoy the end result sufficiently. At least, it prohibited me from doing so. I suppose, at a later stage, I might enjoy them quite a bit, if they hone their craft and songwriting further.
At any rate, and it’s a bit funny to see, this relative resurgence, of the Italian scene, almost some twenty years, after the first wave of successful Italian bands took the scene by (thunder) storm! Here’s to another twenty!
