My Soliloquy
The Interpreter
Sensory Records
2013
The prog rock/metal tsunami that started in 2012 keeps going on… that’s great news for the prog followers I guess. This time we have My Soliloquy’s debut album. Although the band started out in 2002 by the multi-instrumentalist & mastermind Pete Morten, it was not until now, after the release of a number of demos & EPs that the first full-length work saw the light of day. Certainly, Pete is a busy man as he’s been with Threshold since 2007 and plays/participates in other bands as well.
“The Interpreter” is an amalgamation of progressive rock/metal music with melodic parts, atmospheric passages and nice instrumental themes. Not very complex to drive you crazy… it mostly hits with its melodiousness and progressiveness on the song arrangements. Sometimes these falsetto, ala John Arch, vocals may sound a bit “bizarre” to all the others expect for the metalheads! If you fancy this style of singing then Pete’s vocals will surely make your day. A crossover of Fates Warning (Arch era), Arch/Matheos, Threshold, Shadow Gallery & Circus Maximus will probably give you a better hint of what you are to experience as soon as you play “The Interpreter”. The production is very good as the album was mixed and mastered by Rob Aubrey (Marillion, Threshold, Jadis, John Wetton, Martin Orford etc.). My only objection is the drum sound; I would prefer it to be a tad punchier.
My persistence in listening to it quite a few times paid off eventually & saved me from getting a false impression of the final outcome. That’s the major downside of being a reviewer. You gotta listen to so many albums and time is never enough. “The Interpreter” is totally a grower and Pete has worked on this album obstinately and has taken care of every little detail. “Star”, for instance, is a tune of explicit beauty and sensation. I fancy the way My Soliloquy seems to have taken and I’d like to see what’s gonna be next. Till then, “The Interpreter” will definitely keep a good company to all the prog rock/metal enthusiasts…
