My Dying Bride - A Map of All Our Failures

From the two major Yorkshire, doom/death – gothic metal bands, I still prefer Paradise Lost the most. My Dying Bride have written their own history in music so far but I believe that they were always second in comparison with Paradise Lost. There was something missing from them, according to me, that PL had (we still hope they get it back nowadays) in order to be more successful & bigger in every part.

Thus said, I think that even though Aaron has left his growls behind, they band is not standing in solid ground at all. Their latest releases were a disappointment for the fans & unfortunately their newest work is not that good. It’s truth that it becomes boring, dull & tiresome after a certain point. Moreover, there are not any significant music parts to overwhelm the fans. The major drawback of this release is not only the lack of inspiration but the total failure on behalf of the band to create dark, melancholic, gloomy & sad music landscapes. They’re struggling to achieve that… a thing that’s obvious if you carefully listen to the album again & again.

Probably, the album’s title “A Map of All Our Failures” is autobiographic at this point for the band… for they did add another failure in their list. Once, they could inspire many bands that followed that doom/death metal path, along with Paradise Lost of course, and create truly dim & mournful music… but now they seem to have lost that ability & inspiration. If something does not change rapidly & thoroughly I do not see a good reason why they should keep going on. If this release was coming from a newcomer, then I’m sure it would have received much negative criticism in general… aside from that, the name My Dying Bride, is not enough to save the day when the music is uninteresting & tedious…
