Momentum
The Freak is Alive
Dark Descent Records
2015
Momentum started out back in 2003 and they released their debut album “Fixation, at Rest” in 2010. It was 5 years later that they band came up with its sophomore release which also marked their music style change.
The opener “Bury the Eyes Once Gold” was a bit confusing at first. It started off like a death/black track and after 2-3 minutes it became an atmospheric/gothic track. I fancy their music transformation and I think they also fancy it; that’s why it is safe to say they changed for the better. At times they reminded me of the gothic side of Moonsell and Tiamat. But that’s only one part of their new sound. The entire album is moving into an atmospheric, gothic, dark, post-rock/metal & doom/sludge style. The tracks are slow/mid tempo on the whole and they exhale a very gloomy and eerie feeling. The album was recorded at Studio ReFlex with Axel “Flex” Arnason and the production is fabulous.
The album is portraying the artwork, lyrics and concept of frontman Holaf, says the press-release. If you take a look at the artwork and listen to the music at the same time, you’ll understand that some really murky & odd is going on Holaf’s mind! Nonetheless “The Freak is Alive” will lead you into shadowy, uncanny, mysterious and esoteric paths. If this is your cup of tea then proceed with caution cuz “The Freak is Alive” and it’s quite dusky down there…
