Lykaion
Heavy Lullabies
Inverse Records
2015
This is the second release for the Italians after their debut “Nothin’ but Death” in 2012. Apart from the fact that the band’s sound has been updated a bit as those 3 years have worked for their own benefit – nothing has really changed since the band continues to move on the atmospheric, gothic, melodic and dark path, influenced by Sentenced, Poisonblack, Charon, To/Die/For, Katatonia, Anathema and so on… I won’t add HIM on the list cuz it’s a disgrace to have been influenced by the top gay-goth band of all times!
The intro “Heavy Lullaby” really made my day. It’s atmospheric, melancholic, gloomy, melodic and rather captivating… a very nice way to open the album. I just wish the next tracks were as good as the intro. There’s nothing wrong with the album in general and those who are fond of gothic metal music will find it quite solid on the whole. It’s just that it sounds a bit too Sentenced as times and the songwriting is so done by the gothic rock/metal book. You know what’s coming next and how it should be done. There’s no imagination on that part. I think they should try other things during their songwriting sessions as well.
The sound is heavy and full even though I think the drums are bit high on the mix. They have a long way to go if they want to be the new “Sentenced”… but I believe that any band should follow its own way without trying to be someone else… so they still have to fix and get rid of various things in order to get a better place on the gothic rock/metal community…
