Lurk are a metal band from Finland who released their self-titled debut album back in 2012. Two years later, it was time for their second attempt entitled “Kaldera”. The band may say they don’t like labels because they feel like music labels limit them, but I have to attempt to put a couple on them in order make you (the reader) get an idea about their sound. Well, I think I would describe them as death/doom/sludge metal. In other words, something dark and heavy.

Slow, rough and aggravated are just a few words that can describe Lurk’s music. Don’t expect any happy themes in “Kaldera” because you won’t find any; the whole album stays consistent to a raw and aggressive mood. Listening to this album feels like visiting the slaughterhouse that Leatherface from “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” was raised (a cult-classic reference for you movie buffs out there). The album creates four bloody concrete walls that surround the listener throughout. To be totally honest, I did feel a little overwhelmed at times. In other words, there were moments when the grinding guitar sound, the tortuously slow drumming and the howling vocals were a bit too much for me. But, I guess, this was the band’s purpose from the start.

There’s really not much more anyone can say about “Kaldera”. It’s a honest attempt that leaves no-one indifferent. I’m sure that some will love it, while others might even hate it. The point is that either way it makes an impact on the listener and, at the end of the day, that’s the most important thing.
