Lordi
Monsterephonic (Theaterror Vs. Demonarchy)
AFM Records
2016
Two years after “Scare Force One”, Lordi are back with the “weirdest” album of their career in my humble opinion. They didn’t change their music style but they did present something kinda “experimental” for their sake.
You see this album lasts about 64 minutes and it has two sides. The first side, from track 1 to track 7, is the classic Lordi side. Melodic hard rock/metal music with poppy refrains that you can sing-along at some cases. The second side presents a kinda modern more “complex” metal side of the band. The tracks (on this side) are more than 5 minutes long and the last one lasts more than 7 minutes; talking of which, “The Night the Monsters Died” is the best track of the second side as it kinda combines both sides in one. The second side – the Demonarchy, tells the story of The Undead Son, The Bloodsucking Count, The She-Wolf and The Witch.
The album was recorded & mixed at Sonic Pump Studios in Finland and produced by Nino Laurenne (Apocalyptica, Stratovarius, Children Of Bodom, Amorphis). The production is heavy & powerful. I guess the last thing one can complain about here is the production.
In truth to be told, this is a way better album than the previous one and probably than the majority of the band’s back-catalogue. Then again, it is a bit too long for this kind of music and it feels like it loses its focus at times. A decent release by the guys that will satisfy their long-time fans, but that’s all… I do not think that any loyal fan of theirs would have expected any better scenario than this…
