I am so sick and tired of bands formed after 2000 trying to revive the 80s hard rock/glam sound. It just sounds so cheesy to my ears. I have a theory for this phenomenon: this sound offers a lot of space for show-off guitar solos, over the top vocals, flamboyant drumming and other stuff like that. So if you and your band want to feel like rockstars, the 80s hard rock sound is the one for you.
The first word that came to my mind whilst listening to Kingdragon’s album “Hide the Sun”, was “outdated”. I think tis word describes the whole record in the best possible way. The vocals are so over the top that they flirt with being irritating at times, most the guitar riffs and solos are lacking substance and sound to be there just to showcase the elaborate and fast skills of the guitar player, and finally, the keyboard sound though out the entire record brings to mind the cheesy one used for “The Final Countdown” by Europe.
With all that said, I have to admit that listening to “Hide the Sun” is not a totally unpleasant experience. All in all, Kingdragon have produced a fun record the kind that, once you’ve pressed play, you tend to hear all the way through. In other words, if you are looking for some good background music for whatever reason, “Hide the Sun” is pretty decent. I am not all that sure if the last statement was actually a compliment for the record or not.
