Killing Tyranny is a San Diego based, metal act, formed by George Gregory (ex-Outraged, ex-Ironworks) and he formed the band (?) last year, producing the album himself and as hard as I tried I couldn’t find a lot of info – initially I made the assumption that he might be the sole contributor, but found this to not be true.

The production is rather impressive for a solo effort pretty much in-your-face and upfront, but trying to compare the album to today’s standards, it does sound a bit overdriven and with the vocals mixed way upfront. I suppose, the style is very much derivative of Armored Saint, Metallica, Anthrax, but nowhere as “catchy”, even if it’s not completely hapless, just not as catchy as these bands in their heyday.

There’s also a bit of a latter day Annihilator and Pantera vibe, here and there, but not all the time. I am guessing the “band” is still trying to accumulate its influences properly and it does display a certain flair on songs like “Caged”, “Martyr” etc., with even some leftfield ideas coming into play on songs like the eponymous one. It sounds like the slightly inbred, but socially concerned (all the lyrics have a bit of a social approach) distant cousin of Metallica and the like. Might be interesting to see, what they could do given a bit more time and a better and less biased, production. Fairly interesting though.
