Kick
Memoirs
Escape Music
2013
Long time no see! It’s been already 9 years since Kick’s previous release. One of the band’s masterminds & songwriter Mikey Jones, decided to release his new “almost solo” work under the Kick moniker. His first solo work was out in 2006. So, was this a smart move to make? I somehow doubt it… but let’s see why.
This is the band’s first album without their original singer Nick Workman (Vega). The vocal duties have been taken care of by Mikey, who has a fairly good “raspy” voice. Kick ain’t a “real band” as only Mikey & his brother Chris are the ones who fully run Kick. The production has been done by Mikey himself and it’s quite good & modern.
“Memoirs” was supposed to be Mikey’s second solo album but at some point there was a turn and he decided to release it as a Kick one … he only knows why. Musically, the album summarizes all the elements & influences from their previous works. Melodic rock,AOR , modern rock and hard rock (80s-90s) music all blend together. The result ain’t bland or tiresome. It’s solid and there are actually several good tracks and nice melodies here and there. It’s just that I feel that something is missing here. Coherence? The actual band feeling? Something’s wrong, either way you see it. I hope they figure it out and fix it in due time. Till then better do as their debut title (“Consider This…”) says and go back on the trail soon…
