The Search Goes On
Despotz Records
2014
With all this late 60s/70s rock party that’s been happening lately, I bet you have lost the essence of this whole musical purpose like I have. You see lots of bands appearing to play “retro rock” while trying to get a place in the sun. Among those bands there are a few that were really into it more than a decade ago. So, as it’s obvious, those older bands which were honoring the 70s rock music are still around and they do distinguish themselves from those that do this for the (lame) “fame & fortune” of today with every release.`
Kamchatka is a Swedish band which started out back in 2001. “The Search Goes On” is the band’s fifth studio-work which also marks an important change on behalf of the band. Along with the original members Thomas “Juneor” Andersson (guitar, vocals) & Tobias Strandvik (drums) is the old-time collaborator and friend Per Wiberg (Candlemass, ex-Opeth, King Hobo, Spiritual Beggars etc.) on bass & vocals. It all started when Thomas & Tobias started recording on their own Shrimpmonkey studios. At the same time they asked Per to produce their album. Since there was no bass player around, they also asked him to record the bass. Per apart from a great keyboardist, is also a great bassist as you will come to realize after listening to this album. Hence, the obvious was there. The guys asked Per to join them as a full-time member and he accepted. So nice & easy!
Kamchatka still pay tribute to the late 60s & 70s classic rock, psychedelic rock, rock & roll, blues-rock & hard rock music. Nothin’ more or less. They fancy what they do and they do it pretty well. They do not follow trends neither do they pretend to be something else. They could have easily been a 70s group. Being a great rock band of the 00s ain’t a minor thing.
“The Search Goes On” has a wonderful sound. It has 70s touches but it ain’t old-fashioned. It’s full & rockin’. The album, as I said earlier, has been produced by Per Wiberg (along with Thomas & Tobias), mixed by Johan Ornborg (Soilwork, Amon Amarth, Lake of Tears etc.) & mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, katatonia, Paradise Lost etc.). Kamchatka are more into the 70s as the blues-rock, hard rock, psychedelic (less) & classic rock elements prevail throughout the album. From the opener “Somedays”, which gives us a hint of what’s gonna follow, up to the last heavy psychedelic rock homonymous track, Kamchatka are delivering the goods with passion, desire & brilliance. Indisputably, “The Search Goes On” is the kind of album that you should look out for, especially if you fancy 70s rock music…
