Gold professes to be dark rock, post-everything etc. etc. and makes a point of being the brainchild of guitarist Thomas Sciarone (ex-The Devil’s Blood) and vocalist Milena Eva (a pseudonym) who sounds a bit like an oververbed singer from The Cramberries minus the annoying top end and Irish mannerisms.
Think of a poorly produced, noise, lo-fi, death rock, in this day and age that attempts to make a social commentary. It’s terribly tiresome, preachy, minimalist and pretentious as f$#k. People might say that shred-music is pretentious and in some cases they might be even right when virtuosity for virtuosity’s sake many times overtakes the compositional aspect but the intended bad recording and repetitive form of many of Gold’s composition doesn’t mean they’re some sort of misunderstood musical geniuses.
While minimalist of other somewhat experimental forms, have had some bands that championed weirdness and in some cases did so in a quite cool and wacky way Gold’s simplistic death rock/punk approach under a post filter and with an intentively low quality production, sounds, annoying...
I understand where Gold are coming from but I hardly find appeal in that spectrum of rock in its broadest term... there might be the odd nifty idea in “Servant”, a single with a completely low fi emoji-filled video, or in O.D.I.R. or some mellow moments in “Taste Me” but I wouldn’t impose myself to the torturous and draining process of listening to the full 42 minutes of these albums for a few blissful seconds.
I am unable to judge something that I am not a fan of... this might appeal to post-whatever fans, whatever that means…
