Free Spirit
All the Shades of Darkened Light
Carpel Music Oy
2014
Free Spirit managed to release their debut album, Pale Sister of Light” in 2009. I missed the chance to present their album back then – but I also had the chance to get to know another melodic hard rock band which fancies the 80s hard rock music and lives by its recipe. Now 5 years later the band is back with its sophomore release. That thing means that things didn’t work out as they planned and instead of getting signed to a label, they released their second album independently again. This is something common in our time but I still cannot see why no label grabbed them… if you consider the fact that less talented acts sign with labels every day.
With a solid production & songwriting influenced by Def Leppard, Danger Danger, Bon Jovi and the likes, these Finnish rockers don’t let go but they insist to rock from the heart. The singer Sami has a raspy voice which fits the band’s 80s inspired hard rock music very well on the whole. There are several songs for any kind of liking on this album. My only objection is the lack of songwriting variety throughout the album… but that’s my point of view. Also maybe those 80s Def song arrangement tricks with the guitars and the vocals… are way too overdone in music but I do fancy them no matter what.
The case is simple here. “All the Shades of Darkened Light” is slightly better than the debut. It’s all about 80s hard rock music. Nothing more, nothing less. So if you still get overjoyed by this kind of music you better check this band out. After all, Free Spirit know that hard rock music is all about the hooklines and they do deliver the goods…
