Dynazty
Sultans of Sin
Stormvox Records/SoFo Records
2012
Dynazty, for those who are aware of the band, come from Sweden and they were formed in 2008. They have released two albums till now, “Bring the Thunder” in 2009 and “Knock You Down” in 2011… and “Sultans of Sin” is their third new work. Dynazty are true to the hard rock 80s legacy, bowing to bands like: Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Europe, Dokken, Skid Row, XYZ, Tuff, Treat and so on.
I happened to watch this band since its beginning and I like the band’s previous works but I believe that they were missing something so as to reach a higher level. “Sultans of Sin” has what it takes… to introduce the band to a wider audience and help them become established in the hard rock scene. The songwriting gets better and better with each new album, the vocals are wonderful, the guitars are superb and the rhythm section very powerful. There’ve been some changes on the band’s camp lately… there’s a new member on board, the guitarist Mike Laver and they also decided to work with a new producer and that affected the band’s sound for the better. The sound is fresh, without having that 80s retro sense, & vigorous as well. This time the guys worked with the renowned producer Peter Tagren (Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Children of Bodom, Skyfire etc.).
The band in “Sultans of Sin” may follow the 80s hard rock/hair metal music formula but the guys did realize that putting their own personality on their music would give them more freedom to express their creativity in a more improved way. Catchy hooks, very good tuneful songs, nice performances and a true rock passion are all over this album… creating an exciting melodic hard rock album. The kind of short duration of the CD (about 37 minutes) will not be able to quench your thirst but that’s why there’s the “play” button! Time flows very pleasantly when listening to the album and all the songs are actually very good. My personal favorites are the astounding catchy moody “Falling” with the killer refrain… the amazing melodic rocker “Land of Broken Dreams” (which was also performed live at the Swedish song contest Melodifestivalen 2012) and the haunting semi-ballad “Back Again”.
“Sultans of Sin” is indeed Dynazty’s best work so far. If you like melodic hard rock music, hair metal attitude & catchy songs then you have no excuse not to get this album. Easily recommended for every rocker who fancies the big 80s hard rock European/American bands.
