Rising out of the Deception ruins, Duskmachine, have been around since 2004 and even though their debut album was released in 2005, they stood in silence all those years and when the piece-puzzles got together, they were ready to unleash their wrath & fury to the world. The band’s features, apart from the “original members”, Randy Black (Primal Fear, ex-Deception, ex-Annihilator, ex-Rebellion, ex-Rooky) on drums & Nikolai Wurk (ex-Deception) on guitars, the bassist Russell Bergquist (Lalu,, ex-Freaks by Nature, ex-Annihilator) and the newly added Joe Comeau (Liege Lord, ex-Ramrod, ex-Annihilator, ex-Jack Frost, ex-Overkill, ex-Tad Morose) on vocals & guitars. I bet you all remember that Annihilator released one of the best albums of their recent history with Joe on vocals.

Anyhow, 8 years of absence from the scene are a lot so, obviously, the guys needed to make a new start. After all, the band ain’t the same as it used to be anymore and the music style has been improved at all levels. Thus, the self-titled second release probably showcases that new era for the band. Heavy riffs, thunderous drumming, leveling bass lines along with Joe’s powerful voice is what you should expect to get when you push “play”. Sometimes thrasher, others more melodic, a few mellower and a bunch heavier… “Duskmachine” has all the elements to captivate the listener who is fond of heavy yet melodic and vigorous metal music. As for the production, it is as heavy & dynamic as it should be for such a release. The album was produced by Achim Köhler (Primal Fear, Sinner, Brainstorm etc.) and mastered by Ken Burke.

Do not let the musicians participating in this album fool you. Your criterion must be the music only and not the one who is playing it. This time a bunch of well-known and respected musicians managed to do what the fans are expecting from them… to bring the house down with their attitude, music and power. My opinion wouldn’t have changed if this album was released by some totally unknown but talented guys, judging by the final result. I know that an eminent line-up raises the expectations for the fans and thankfully all those gifted musicals are performing according to their aptitudes. Well, possibly tracks like: “Dying in My Skin” & “My Empty Room” (which features a special appearance by the renowned Geoff Downes [Yes, Asia]) might catch you off guard but they are so frigging good and melodious that I do not believe that anyone will bitch about ‘em. In any case, right after those songs the band offers two of the album’s heavier & faster tracks… just to please everyone I guess! Overall, “Duskmachine” is a strong metal album with many enjoyable tracks…
