DevilDriver
Winter Kills
Napalm Records
2013
Being active for more than a decade and having gained more than they could ever imagine or even deserve, DevilDriver is one band that, at the specific time, holds its fans in comparison to the other “golden bands” of its generation. They have released an album at the same period along with the other bands of their time, and having heard them all, I can say that DevilDriver present a more cohesive music result even though they do not impress at long last.
“Winter Kills” is the first album with the band’s new bassist Christopher Towning (Bury Your Dead) and their first album on their new label. Probably, there is anxiety & pressure when bands are in a major label which always goes after the money and does not care for the music at all. Now that the band has changed label, it seems way cooler and ready to enjoy the music in general. The production is great as they have cooperated with the well-known producer by Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Chimaira, All That Remains, Deicide, Whitechapel etc.) once more.
The album suffers from a monotonous atmosphere as all the songs are kinda alike and there’s no diversity. The “weird” thing is the cover on the mainstream song “Sail” by the pop band Awolnation. That song has become a “hit”, even though it is bland and “too gay”. DevilDriver have delivered a quite interesting cover and it’s funny to see how the original song is and how they did it afterwards.
