Chris Caffery is a very talented guy and it’s very likely that you might know him from his days in Savatage and more recently TSO. Being a talented player however doesn’t automatically mean that you’re a good songwriter. In Savatage he might have been there, but the “bulk” of these duties fell on the shoulders of “the mountain king”… speaking of whom, on this the “fifth” solo effort, CC, tries even more than before on occasion to sound like him... but he’s flatter. His singing voice is not annoying, yet it’s not his forte. Also, assuming production duties as well as all instruments bar keys and drums (where Brian Tichy, the famous sessionist can be found occupying the stool), isn’t doing the project any favors. There’s enough clarity as far as instrument separation is concerned, but the brightness and production of each of them is far from ideal dragging the whole result down to polished demo levels... with even Tichy’s fine performances getting buried and sounding quite “plastic” and not even the good type of “plastic”...

See, Chris’ first album “Faces” had maybe 2-3 good songs, but after that, he seemed to put out more and more albums of angry, monolithic heavy metal, a little akin to Dr. Butcher and Savatage, but with too many lyrics, like really almost constant blabbering over almost the entire songs’ duration... the occasional cool riff or nice solo (ie “Hot Wheelz”), are not really allowed to “shine”…

Caffery has remained formulaic in his songwriting approach and in the face of diminishing interest, he obviously had to do this, “on his own” on probably an ever shrinking budget… those two factors combined make, “Your Heaven is Real” one of the worse efforts, much in the vein of “Pins and Needles”, with few songs standing out in their entirety, possibly the title track, “Hot Wheelz” the quite light hearted instrumental “02/26/15” and the “honest” sounding ballad “Come Home”. It’s a pity, really as Caffery has some good ideas and he’s obviously doing these solo out of a need to get his creativity out there, that he cannot “weed out” the stuff he comes up with and just seems to be churning out, whatever comes to his head, even if it’s over 7 minutes of wallowing in self-pity. It’s a pity, “music man”...

(Admin): Why all this hatred & negativity? I really don’t get it! How professional is it when a well-known musician induces his fans to personally “attack” the guy who has written a bad review about his latest album?!! Caffery deleted this post from his FB page, but I have “saved it”, just in case. He did an unprofessional & improper act cuz he didn’t like a specific review about his album and after a couple of hours he just deleted the post – so no harm done!!! The most unacceptable thing is how this musician’s fans ran to defend their “idol” by cursing and swearing the reviewer and his opinion. Is this for real? Do these people even have self-control and they believe they control their actions or do they just blindly follow, like a bunch of sheep, their “leader”?! This is so friggin disappointing…

(Rockavlon): Personal attack? Seriously? And why would I bother doing a track by track review of an album i find band? (I do track by track albums of albums I like, or at least I feel they are multifaceted enough to grant such an in depth review)…

In the past CC has taken it to attacking personally individuals that didn’t like his work, which I find childish. If this was the only “bad review” of the album, I’d say it would be fair to whine about it but apart from the so called “blast network” (google it) and its affiliates that have given this album quite stellar reviews, I can’t think of anyone else that has. If also his solo material is so much in demand, why is it not out on a large company, why hasn’t he ever toured any of his solo albums?

TSO might be the answer and the fact that a Christmas show is making ex Savatage members a ton of cash, but I can’t think of anything lamer than X-mas albums masquerading as rock music and I’ve always blasted Twisted Sister who I happen to love for doing several of them.

Now this is me taking a mild, snipe at him, put not out of personal spite but in response to the ridiculous notion that I cannot have an opinion, if I’m not paying lip service to his side project.

Also on the matter of the mix the instruments can be heard – there’s separation, in that you can hear all performances, but then again certain instruments don’t sound as “produced” as they should, probably as a result of this being something that Chris recorded and mixed himself. It sounds like a good demo. A very good demo but not an awesome album with a great big meaty production. Bad choice of words on my side however.

And if this has got nothing to do with budget constraints why has he done this himself and not collaborated with Nik Chinboukas or anyone, for that matter, if he wasn’t pleased with NC. His first few solo albums featured members of Rainbow etc. and without setting the world on fire, they were decent enough... but the last 2-3 not so...

And you are correct to assume that for every album I rate poorly is because I have personal vendettas with musicians I don’t know personally.

I had “issues” (that cost me money) with a bunch of New Jersey assholes still that didn’t stop me from having their album as a top 25 album the previous year...

And for every album I think highly off, I’m either a groupie of those artist/bands, or they must be paying me a shitload of money...

Yeah Two finger salute. Also if you could bother mr RZ, go to the friggin “About” section and see how anonymous I am. I guess that I should name the account exactly after my given name to please each and every moron on CC FB page. What a pathetic bunch of CC webmonkeys. It’s clearly apparent that I hate CC who I call very talented at the very beginning of the “review”... now if his considerable guitar playing talent goes wasted that’s another story altogether.... but i guess hey – the internet – Free speech for the dumb. I could even post a silly meme and feel proud if people posted some more under my own... it’s called let’s see who’s dumber.

Once I’m back from holidays this weekend I tell you what. We’ll hold a special “CC” competition so I can give one of you lucky B#$tards, the entire discography (bar your heaven is real) of Chris, including some rare promos, the singles, the leather digi of “Faces” etc., as a thank you for this flood of f-bombs.

See there was a great satirist of the last century, Laskaratos, who said when he was once given a basked full of “horns” (believe it or not) in a reply with a basket of roses that he sent to his “haters” that each gives what they have in abundance. So spew your bile at me and i’ll give back to you the gift of some music... I want you to keep on your comments coming and I’ll pick one and he/she will be the winner!!! C’mon bully me, belittle me, I like the abuse... Gosh even writing this paragraph feels masochistic...
