Alfapokalyps
Dark Essence Records
2014
Here, we deal with a newcomer from Sweden and since “Alfapokalyps” is their debut release a little info about the band is necessary. The band took shape in 2010 and even though it is new to the scene its members are not new at all. They have been in the black metal scene of their country since the early 90s and have participated in bands like Vinterland and early Maze of Torment.
Anyhow, they guys decided to blend their beloved black metal with atmospheric, rock, punk & new wave elements. On the one hand, the whole thing sounds somewhat interesting though “sick” but on the other hand, it leaves a lot to be desired. The black metal components are overwhelming the whole album and the language thing (the lyrics are all in Swedish) is another issue. The production is rather “raw” and sharp. The album features 3 notable guest appearances as well “Bättre Dar” – guest vocals by Niklas Kvarforth (Shining), “Såld På Mörkret” – guest vocals by Hoest (Taake) & “Indiehora” – guest vocals by V’gandr (Helheim).
To cut to the chase, “Alfapokalyps” is a black metal album which is embellished with a few atmospheric, rock, punk & new wave elements… not an actual mix of those music genres. I can’t really say if “Alfapokalyps” will satisfy the old-school black metalers or it can “seduce” anyone who’s not into black metal due to the other fewer diverse music features. Only time can tell…
