Dan Reed Network are ecstatic to follow up their UK November Tour announcement with details of their brand new studio album “Origins” on Friday November 23rd, 2018, via Reed’s own ‘Zero One Entertainment’ Label.
“Origins” follows DRN’s hugely successful comeback album “Fight Another Day” (2016). Physical pre-orders for “Origins” are available from Monday 13th August here. All orders will receive a digital version of the first single “Fade to Light” as a free download.
To celebrate the announcement of their new album DRN are also extremely proud to share the first single “Fade to Light” with a music video they feel encapsulates the whole experience of recording “Origins”.
“The video for "Fade to Light" is taken from the inaugural live studio recording session at Blueprint Studios in Manchester and is the perfect microcosm for this entire process. What I think really translates throughout is how having an audience in the room fed the band with a unique energy that pushed us to expand our creative horizons. We’re thrilled with the results”, explains Dan Reed.
While recording the album DRN opened the studio doors to the public and invited them in to be a part of an exclusive series of recording sessions that spanned the globe with tracks that would eventually become Origins recorded at Blueprint Studio’s in Manchester, The Power Station in NYC, Nia Studios in Portland Oregon and finally Studio 4 in Stockholm.
“We felt we were in the unique position to make this an immersive global event and break down the boundaries between those who love creating music and those love enjoying it. Each studio provided its own variety of motivation. Whether that be the knowledge of artists of who’d recorded there in the past, personal memories of the location we were in or the friendly faces watching on and inspiring us directly”, says Dan Reed.
The concept allowed supporters of the band to intimately witness the whole process of recording a brand new song from scratch with the band individually tracking drums, bass, guitar, keyboards and vocals before inviting the audience to participate and provide backing vocals for the song as can be seen in the brand new video for “Fade to Light”. The audience were also witness to a classic Dan Reed Network being re-imagined right before their eyes.
A major part of this idea was taking control of the creative process moving forward as well as reclaiming music we’d recorded in the past. We thought those in attendance would really appreciate us not only creating something new but reimagining one of their favourite songs. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed revisiting these songs and contemplating the artistic journey we went on at the time and what we now can bring to that now as more mature song writers and musicians”, continues Dan Reed.
Dan Reed Network recently announced their upcoming “Origins” November 2018 Headline UK Tour that will see the band take in major cities across the UK in support of the new album. Special guests on the tour are Mason Hill and Hollowstar.

1.“ Fade to Light”:
The track ‘Fade to Light’ started off as a music bed that Brion James composed in Honduras and sent to me in Prague. I really liked the mood of what would become the verse sections and felt there was a darkness that morphed in to some kind of hope as the track developed. This immediately gave me the idea that something can not only fade in to darkness but can also fade in to light. Applying that to a relationship with another human being or with a task that is in front of you I discovered a story of taking conflict and struggle, internal or external, and overcoming that through finding the insight and strength through embracing the love and friendship we receive in this life. It’s about finding recognizing the people and places where find solace and never letting them go.
2. “Right in Front of Me”:
I often struggle with composing upbeat tracks these last years for they can often come off as if they are trying to impress through the energy of the track and not through the content of the lyric. We knew we wanted a track with some positive high energy on this album and I had this really poppy melody for a lyric ‘I’m never coming down, down, down from this high... I’ll be around, ‘round, ‘round every day and night’... but it wasn’t until I discovered why a person would be that devoted in their deepest heart that the song made sense. Realizing the gifts and good fortune we have right in front of us the whole time we are busying ourselves looking for something better is the most important thing to remember in this life. ‘Right in Front of Me’ is a high paced reminder to always take stock in what we have.
3. “Shameless”:
‘Shameless’ is about a love, romantic or friend based, that no matter what the parameters of their life is their connection will always make sense and will forever remain integral to both people involved. The mood of the track is one of deep contemplation and of the weight of such relationships, but also the celebration of the discovery and joy that can be found in relationships that may be misunderstood by those who know nothing of the connection but remain a blessing to the two souls experiencing it. Often we are told we are to feel ashamed in this life for choices we make... and of course if the choices are made with malice and dark intentions then emotions like shame have an important role, however, when we give everything of ourselves to another person or project with good intentions and true joy is found there then no matter what the outcome their bond should remain ‘Shameless’ for an eternity if both people are finding inspiration together.
4. “One Last Time”:
Having a job that takes you away from home a lot, or takes up a tremendous amount of time, dedication and focus can wreak all your relationships if the friends and romantic relationships in your life don’t command a tremendous amount of patience and understanding. ‘One Last Time’ is an admission of how difficult that proposition is and also a poem of gratitude to all those who remain by your side even though it’s not always wine and roses.
5. “Ritual”:
Being that the Manchester Studio Sessions in December 2017 was the first recording event we thought it would be fitting to re-record ‘Ritual’ and invite the live audience to sing the tribal chant on what was our first single on Polygram Records in 1987. ‘Ritual’ was DRN’s introduction to the international music community and in many ways defined what journalists and music lovers alike began calling ‘funk rock’ when it came to describe DRN. The original chant was born from producer Bruce Fairbairn bringing Dan Reed to a local college music department in Vancouver, Canada, and introducing him to an African percussionist named Dido. When the debut album was almost finished at Little Mountain Sound, Dido brought down many of his drums and other percussion instruments and the entire band, Dido, and even Fairbairn manned different instruments and recorded the intro to Ritual. From the initial passes Dido was heard in the background chanting what became one of the most memorable elements of the first album.
6. “Forgot to Make Her Mine”:
This track is always the go to song in the DRN set when the band believes it’s time to get down and dirty with the funk while at the same time mixing in one of DRN’s most iconic rock guitar riffs. ‘Forgot to Make Her Mine’ never fails to get the crowd moving and out of their seats, while the subject of losing someone because you didn’t give enough affection and attention to them will remain timeless. The band knew that tracking the song in the legendary ‘Power Station’ in New York with a live audience meant it was time to rock it up and take advantage of the massive drum sounds bands have been getting there for decades. DRN slowed this version down to bring out the funk even more and gave guitar riffs even more room to breathe.
7. “Let it Go”:
Throughout the years the track ‘Let it Go’ has been the song most DRN supporters state has helped them through difficult times in their life. It has been said many times that music has a healing quality and if that is true then this song could be considered DRN’s contribution to that concept. However, this time it has been reimagined by guitarist Brion James as a more uplifting soul track as opposed to the original pensive and often sombre version. Recorded in the band’s hometown of Portland, Oregon with a live audience made this new version even more poignant.
8. “Rainbow Child”:
It’s fair to say that without the success of ‘Rainbow Child’ throughout Sweden and the UK that DRN would not be where they are today. Being that the fourth and final Studio Session event for creating the new album Origins was held in Stockholm, Sweden, it made sense to invite this live audience to be the choir on the choruses and the outro of the band’s biggest hit. Being that track is about honouring the child who lives inside of us all, and written in a parking lot of a Grateful Dead show in Oakland, California, in 1988, where everyone was dancing with reckless abandon, it seemed appropriate to re-record ‘Rainbow Child’ half way around the world on the 30th Anniversary of its inception, and in the city that embraced the song more than any other when it was released.
