All That Remains is currently touring to promote their seventh studio release, “The Order of Things”, and they visited the Rams Head Live in downtown Baltimore, Maryland on December 13th, 2015. The show opened with supporting bands, Sons Of Texas, Audiotopsy and Devour The Day.
Sons Of Texas and Audiotopsy are fairly new with the first forming this year and the latter in 2013. Neither disappointed as they each played fantastic sets that brought the crowd to an early frenzy, mosh pit and all. Both bands appear to have the chops to become successful as their fan bases continue to grow.
Devour The Day, another up and coming band, followed Audiotopsy. They’ve been touring regularly in support of their first release, “Time & Pressure”. Let it be known that this band puts on a great show. Joey Walser is a beast on bass and he’s quite fun to watch. He works hard on stage, so much so, that waves of sweat fly about each time he flicks his head. On the other side of the stage is guitarist, David Hoffman, who equally works the stage as much as Walser. Factor in solid vocals by Blake Allison and the steady drumming of Ronnie Farris and you have a great show and great music. Towards the end of the set, Allison brought excitement to the crowd as he stood atop the security barrier. Balanced precariously, he managed to belt out lyrics as he reached down to greet the fans.
The energy of the crowd grew as the stage lights dimmed, in anticipation of All That Remains to begin their set. They were met with raucous applause as they stepped onto the darkened stage, one by one. A spotlight shone on Philip Labonte as he stared into the crowd with a look of approval and with that, he put one foot on his riser, the music started with a jolt and he growled out the lyrics.
Much debate has been made after the release of “The Order of Things”, with some longtime fans claiming the band has gone mainstream, while others find the release a perfect blend of music that includes their original sound as well as songs containing only clean vocals. Regardless of which side of the fence you’re on, one thing is certain and that is All That Remains kicks ass live. They played a blistering set that included several songs from their current release, with the rest coming from their last four albums. Labonte’s vocals, both clean and growling, were spot on and new bassist Aaron Patrick didn’t miss a beat.
If you have a chance to see any of the few remaining dates in 2015, don’t pass up the opportunity. From the amazing riffs by Oli Herbert and Mike Martin to the blazing drums of Jason Costa, the band put on great performance that was well worth the price of admission.
