Pyogenesis is one of the weirdest bands out there, beginning as death metal they increasingly added gothic and pop elements, jumping after their first album on Osmose to Nuclear Blast, who mind you, wasn’t the behemoth that it is today (releases like Therion’s “Theli” and the Nightwish albums really propelled it to where it is today) so sometime towards the end of the 90s, in 1997 I think they released the ludicrously shifty album called “Unpop”, with a couple of members then leaving the band to create “Liquido, the band that did have only one hit with “Narcotic” and then pretty much disappeared down the annals of history.
Pyogenesis continued however releasing more albums and touring relentlessly, never quite maintaining a very steady style… only a going concern in their native Germany. It’s undeniable that they have the experience of some 20 years, but their boring, gothic, pop metal, in whichever configuration isn’t either poppy or gothic enough to be labeled as either so their amorphous and homogenized sound soon after the initial “shock” is absorbed, begins to tire…
“Steam Paves Its Way (The Machine)” – a sort of steampunk, experimental pop nagger with some blastbeats and occasional death metal growls, soon crushes into pop territory not to be matched again by anything on the album either… there’s some punk pop, “A Love Once New Has Now Grown Old” that's rather uninteresting, the half stolen “This Won’t Last Forever” misguided effort at a ballad, but soon after that the record runs completely out of steam and becomes “lifeless” & truly boring… unless you’re a fan, for some bizarre reason, keep your distance.
