South African singer-songwriter and guitarist, Dan Patlansky, is set to the release his new studio album “Perfection Kills” in the UK on February 2nd, 2018.
The album is the follow up to 2016’s critically acclaimed “Introvertigo”, which was voted #1 Blues Rock Album 2016 by Blues Rock Review.
To coincide with the announcement of the release of his new album, Dan will be special guest on Joanne Shaw Taylor’s nationwide 8-date UK tour that starts on Tuesday 7th November at the Gateshead Sage. For the tour, he will release his new single “Dog Day” taken from the “Perfection Kills” album.
Patlansky was nominated as one of Classic Rock magazine’s hotly tipped new artists of 2015. His album, “Dear Silence Thieves” received accolades and praise from the British press. He’s been voted Most Promising Male Blues Artist by Blues & Soul Magazine, and only recently has he been nominated as Best International Solo Artist at the Planet Rock Radio ‘Rocks’ Awards.
“Perfection Kills” was recorded at Scherzo Productions, a recording studio in Dan’s home town of Pretoria, South Africa. Dan chose Scherzo because he wanted to make a different sounding record and he felt it was the right studio for his vision.
Patlansky produced the album himself, something he hadn’t done in years. Says Dan: “I learnt so much working with Theo Crous, who was the producer on my previous two albums "Dear Silence Thieves" and "Introvertigo". I worked on pre-production and song writing with Theo on a couple of the tracks for "Perfection Kills" and applied what I learnt to the recording and production process of the album. "Perfection Kills" is all about my vision of making a record that still makes the songwriting a priority as in the past, the final product delivers a far more real and organic result”.
What sets the new album apart from its predecessors is the honesty and live sound of the songs. “To me it feels like a band playing live in the studio which isn’t far from the truth. As mentioned the songs are still the priority and always will be, but on this album they come across far closer to the way they will sound live. This is the album I’ve wanted to make for a few years now. So all I wanted to do was get the sound and production in my head across to the listeners in a raw and charmingly rough way”.
What songs from the new album is Dan most looking forward to playing on the road? “The first single, "Dog Day", and the songs "Johnny", "Mayday" and "Too Far Gone" are first that come to mind. I think all the songs will translate at a different level compared to previous songs on the live stage. I cannot wait to test drive the tunes”.
Dan started writing songs and recording the new album in 2016. Some of the songs were co-written and arranged with Theo Crous. “I got together with the band once I had basic ideas and messed about with them in a rehearsal space for a week”, reflects Dan. “I went back tweaked a few and then we were ready for the studio. The recording process was semi live and took two weeks to complete. All the songs on "Perfection Kills" were recorded and engineered by Jaco Naudé at Scherzo Productions in South-Africa, mixed by Stefan Swart in South Africa and all tracks mastered by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Mastering U.S.A.”
“Perfection Kills” is a concept that Dan whole heartedly believes in. Says Dan: “In any art form perfection doesn’t exist because there is no yard stick to measure it by. The pursuit of perfection ends up doing far more harm to the art than good. This was the mind set we adhered to when we went into the recording studio, "Why try to be perfect?"”...
What plans does the adventurous South African blues rock guitarist have in store in 2018? “There’s going to be a big emphasis on a lot of touring around the new record which I can’t wait for. In November 2017 I will be touring with Joanne Shaw Taylor in the U.K and will perform the first single, "Dog Day", live for the first time. In March 2018 we return to the U.K/Europe for the "Perfection Kills" album launch tour”.

Trackl by track by Dan Patlansky:
1. “Johnny”:
This song is about a kid who had a challenging upbringing, and how survival turned him into a tough and sometimes volatile adult.
2. “Never Long Enough”:
This song is about being home with the love of my life and how the seemingly mundane is something I yearn for. The clock is constantly ticking to my next departure and these moments with her are never long enough.
3. “Mayday”:
The modern day rat-race is blindsiding people from the most important thing in life; LOVE. As a result, relationships are crashing.
4. “Too Far Gone”:
With the annihilation of the environment, famine, war, greed and human stupidity, the world is becoming scarier every day. Are we too far gone?
5. “Judge A Man”:
This song is a moan about girls I have dated before, that believed being a musician is not a real job. Judge a man on what he achieves, and not on your own ignorant views.
6. “Junket Man”:
A Junket man is someone who travels for their livelihood, which is an accurate description of my career. Travel is just an inescapable part of the job.
7. “iEyes”:
Our complete addiction to living life through a screen, not noticing the high res world all around us.
8. “Shake the Cage”:
I believe in the theory that life works in 7 year cycles. This song is about embracing change and actively changing your mind set every now and then, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone.
9. “My Dear Boy”:
This is a song for the newest addition to the family, my son Jack.
10. “Dog Day”:
We all have those days where nothing goes our way. However, our first world problems are nothing compared to what many people have to deal with.
