In Flames
Siren Charms
Sony Music
2014
I remember how this band used to be on its prime. A true extreme metal powerful act from Sweden, ready to take on the world. The years passed by and In Flames “evolved” for the better or for the worse… that lies in the eye of the beholder.
What started as a metal band has become a modern wannabe pop-metal band with mainstream elements little by little. Now under a major label… the need to become more “commercial” and pop-ish will grow even more. What’s also hard to comprehend is the fact that the last albums sound so identical. It’s like they have a certain songwriting formula and they create hundreds of the same tracks. That’s the opposite of the abovementioned “evolution”. They do “flirt” with gaycore/metalcore and gothic rock at times too. Unfortunately, the melodies are rather forgettable and the guitar riffs are quite plain as well… the whole album falls into the tedious/uninspired category.
So, if this album’s sales are more than satisfactory, what is their next release gonna be like? More or less like this one but with less “extreme” or metal elements and lots of mainstream, popish & metalcore (?) commercial shit. It already sounds tempting huh?!! Let’s wait and see! Ohh and another thing… I bet that the “mainstream press” is gonna dig it… can you guess why?!!!
